ADOPTION INFORMATION

Interested in adopting or fostering one of our amazing dogs? Take the first step and fill out an application! Please allow us a few days to review the application and get back to you. Be sure to check out the basic requirements needed to qualify.

Requirements & Important Info:

-Must be 21 years or older. If not, parent or guardian must provide approval to adoption or foster interest.

-Our dogs will make amazing personal companions and should not be adopted for the sole purpose of being a service, working, or guard dog.

-If you are renting, your landlord must give the approval to fostering or adopting, NO EXCEPTIONS.

-Homes that will have the dog alone for 9+ hours will not qualify unless additional arrangements are made.

-All fields in the adoption application must be filled out completely or your application may be denied otherwise

-All current animals in the home must be spayed/neutered, to date on their rabies and distemper vaccines, heartworm test, annual wellness exam, and receive monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Please ensure your animal is up to date PRIOR to applying to adopt, as failure to pass your veterinarian reference could result in denial of your adoption application.

-Adopted dogs must be taken to the veterinarian within three weeks of adoption. PIYHR dogs receive basic vetting upon intake to the rescue and will come to adopters up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, up to date on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention, microchipped, and spayed/neutered if age-appropriate.

-Due to the fearfulness of many of our dogs, we often require adopters to have securely fenced yards. However, some of our dogs may be considered for homes with smaller enclosures (i.e. secure patios) and we do occasionally adopt to apartment-style homes or homes without fenced yards.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE APPLYING:

  • Paws In Your Hand's ability to determine if a dog is good with children is based on foster family interactions and observations. We do the very best we can be based on situational ability. We cannot guarantee that a dog is child friendly as we cannot observe your children's interaction with dogs before adoption.

  • Applying does NOT guarantee that you will adopt your dog of choice. We can’t promise that the dog you applied for will be available at the end of the approval process. We will , however, work with you on identifying a good fit for your household!

  • We don't have a physical location where you can come and visit our dogs. They are all located in foster homes throughout Texas. This means that if you're interested in adopting one of our pups, you would have to commit to a dog you've never met before. We understand that this can be a bit daunting, but we assure you that all of our dogs are amazing and deserve a loving home. Unfortunately, we might not always be able to provide videos of our dogs even if they are in foster care. However, we are more than happy to answer any questions you may have about a particular pup.

  • PIYHR  makes no guarantees on breed--most animals we receive from shelters are mixed breeds. Regarding shelter dogs, especially mixed breeds, it can be challenging to accurately determine their specific breed composition without conducting a DNA test. Shelter staff and volunteers often make educated guesses about a dog's breed based on their physical features, characteristics, and behavior. However, these assessments are not definitive and can vary from person to person.

  • Applying does not mean you are required to adopt, it just lets us know you that are seriously considering adopting. Please only fill out an application if you are serious about adopting!

  • Applications will be reviewed as received. If in our opinion, a pet is a good candidate for you, an adoption coordinator will contact you by email and discuss the next steps in the adoption process.

  • before applying to adopt, we encourage you to consider what you are looking for in your new pet and to be realistic in your expectations.

  •  Most PIYHR animals are located in Texas and will only be transported to out-of-state residents once a deposit has been made and the application has been approved.
